[247] **"Then, reproved by the words of others, he takes up weapons (satthāni)":** "Then (atha)" — this is a word-junction, a connection of words, a completion of a phrase, a combination of syllables, a smoothness of consonants, a sequential ordering of words: such is the word "atha."
**"Weapons (satthāni)":** there are three weapons — the weapon of body, the weapon of speech, and the weapon of mind. The threefold bodily misconduct (kāya-duccarita) is the weapon of body; the fourfold verbal misconduct (vacī-duccarita) is the weapon of speech; the threefold mental misconduct (mano-duccarita) is the weapon of mind.
**"Reproved by the words of others":** reproved by preceptors, or by teachers, or by those who share the same preceptor, or by those who share the same teacher, or by friends, or by acquaintances, or by intimates, or by companions, he speaks a deliberate lie. He says: "Venerable sir, I was delighted with the going forth (pabbajjā), but my mother must be supported; that is why I have disrobed." He says: "My father must be supported; that is why I have disrobed." He says: "My brother must be supported, my sister must be supported, my son must be supported, my daughter must be supported, my friends must be supported, my colleagues must be supported, my relatives must be supported, my blood relations must be supported; that is why I have disrobed." He makes the weapon of speech — he produces it, generates it, brings it forth, brings it into being. Hence: "Then, reproved by the words of others, he takes up weapons."
