[251] *Reputed as wise* (paṇḍito ti samaññāto) means: here a certain one, formerly, in his state as an ascetic (samaṇabhāve), has had his fame and praise proclaimed: "He is wise (paṇḍita), competent, intelligent, of great learning, a brilliant speaker, of excellent wit — a master of the discourses (suttantika)," or "a bearer of the Discipline (vinayadhara)," or "a speaker on the Dhamma (dhammakathika)" … or "one who gains the attainment (samāpatti) of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana)." Thus he is known, well known, widely reputed; therefore it is said, "reputed as wise."
