[252] **"Resolved upon solitary conduct (ekacariyaṃ adhiṭṭhito)"** means: one is resolved upon solitary conduct for two reasons: by way of what is reckoned as going forth (pabbajjā), or in the sense of relinquishing the group.
How is one resolved upon solitary conduct by way of what is reckoned as going forth? Having cut off every impediment (palibodha) of the household life … thus one is resolved upon solitary conduct by way of what is reckoned as going forth.
How is one resolved upon solitary conduct in the sense of relinquishing the group? Having thus gone forth, he, alone, [resorts to] remote forest and woodland-thicket [lodgings] … thus one is resolved upon solitary conduct in the sense of relinquishing the group. Hence, "resolved upon solitary conduct."
