[256] **"Knowing this danger here, in what went before and what came after, the sage (muni)"** — **"This"** means: formerly, in the state of an ascetic (samaṇa), there were fame and renown; afterwards, for one who, having repudiated the Buddha, the Dhamma, the Saṅgha, and the training (sikkhā), has reverted to the low life [of a layman], there are disrepute and infamy — having known, having understood, weighed, judged, clarified, and made evident this success (sampatti) and failure (vipatti). **"Muni"** means: knowledge (ñāṇa) is called sagacity (mona), that is, the wisdom which is understanding … having passed beyond attachment and the net [of craving (taṇhā)], he is a muni. **"Here"** means: in this view, in this preference (khanti), in this inclination (ruci), in this acceptance (ādāya), in this Dhamma, in this Discipline (vinaya), in this Dhamma-and-Discipline, in this fundamental teaching (pāvacana), in this holy life (brahmacariya), in this Teacher's dispensation, in this individual existence, in this world of men.
