[257] **He should make firm the practice of walking alone (ekacariyaṃ daḷhaṃ kayirā)**: one should make firm the practice of walking alone for two reasons — by way of what is reckoned as the going forth (pabbajjā), or in the sense of relinquishing the group (gaṇāvavassagga).
How should one make firm the practice of walking alone by way of what is reckoned as the going forth? Having cut off all the impediment of the household life, having cut off the impediment of children and wife, having cut off the impediment of relatives, having cut off the impediment of friends and companions, having cut off the impediment of stores, having shaved off hair and beard, having clothed himself in ochre robes, having gone forth from the home life into homelessness, and having attained the state of owning nothing, he should alone walk, dwell, comport himself, conduct himself, maintain himself, carry on, and keep himself going. Thus should one make firm the practice of walking alone by way of what is reckoned as the going forth.
How should one make firm the practice of walking alone in the sense of relinquishing the group? Having thus gone forth, he should alone resort to remote lodgings (senāsana) in forests and woodland thickets — with little sound, with little noise, free of the breath of passing people, suitable for humans' privacy, fitting for seclusion. He should walk alone, stand alone, sit alone, lie down alone; alone he should enter the village for alms, alone he should return, alone he should sit in private, alone he should determine upon the walking-meditation path; alone he should walk, dwell, comport himself, conduct himself, maintain himself, carry on, and keep himself going. Thus should one make firm the practice of walking alone in the sense of relinquishing the group. He should make the practice of walking alone firm, make it steadfast; he should be one of firm undertaking, of steadfast undertaking, in wholesome dhammas. Therefore it is said: **he should make firm the practice of walking alone**.
