[267] **Beings tied to sensual pleasures envy the one who has crossed the flood (ogha)** — *Pajā* (beings) is a designation for beings. [Note 1: M. reads *anapekkhamāno*.] Beings who are impassioned, greedy, tied, infatuated, engrossed, attached, fastened, and impeded in sensual pleasures — they¹ wish for, welcome, long for, envy, and yearn after one who has crossed the flood of sensuality (kāmogha), crossed the flood of existence (bhavogha), crossed the flood of views (diṭṭhogha), crossed the flood of ignorance (avijjogha), crossed the entire path of saṃsāra; who has crossed over, crossed beyond, passed over, fully surmounted, and transcended it; who has gone to the far shore, reached the far shore; gone to the end, reached the end; gone to the summit, reached the summit; gone to the limit, reached the limit; gone to the consummation, reached the consummation; gone to shelter, reached shelter; gone to a haven, reached a haven; gone to refuge, reached refuge; gone to fearlessness, reached fearlessness; gone to the imperishable (accuta), reached the imperishable; gone to the deathless (amata), reached the deathless; gone to Nibbāna, reached Nibbāna. Just as debtors long for and envy freedom from debt; just as the sick long for and envy health; just as those bound in bonds long for and envy release from bondage; just as slaves long for and envy freedom; just as those who have entered upon a desert road² long for and envy a place of safety — even so, beings who are impassioned, greedy, tied, infatuated, engrossed, attached, fastened, and impeded in sensual pleasures — they³ wish for, welcome, long for, envy, and yearn after one who has crossed the flood of sensuality, crossed the flood of existence … gone to Nibbāna, reached Nibbāna. Hence: **beings tied to sensual pleasures envy the one who has crossed the flood.** Therefore the Blessed One said: [Notes 1, 3: P., M. read *te*. Note 2: P., M. read *kantāraddhānapakkhandā*.] For the sage (muni) who lives void, wandering without concern for sensual pleasures, who has crossed the flood — beings tied to sensual pleasures envy him. The Seventh, the Exposition of the Tissametteyya Sutta (Tissametteyyasuttaniddesa), is finished. _________________ The Eighth: the Exposition of the Pasūra Sutta (Pasūrasuttaniddesa)
