[272] **"Many are entrenched in individual truths (paccekasaccesu puthū niviṭṭhā)"** means: many ascetics and brahmins are entrenched, established, clung, committed, held fast, and resolved upon many individual truths (paccekasacca); they are entrenched, established, clung, committed, held fast, and resolved thus: "The world is eternal; this alone is true, anything else is vain"; they are entrenched, established, clung, committed, held fast, and resolved thus: "The world is not eternal … the Tathāgata after death neither exists nor does not exist; this alone is true, anything else is vain."

Thus, "many are entrenched in individual truths." Therefore the Blessed One said:
"Right here alone is purity (suddhi)," so they assert;
they do not declare that purification lies in other teachings (dhammā).
That upon which they depend, there proclaiming it excellent,
many are entrenched in individual truths.
