[276] **"Dependent on another, they speak contentious talk"** (vadanti te aññasitā kathojjaṃ): they are dependent upon, thoroughly dependent upon, attached to, gone over to, cleaving to, and resolved upon another — a teacher, an exposition of the Dhamma (dhammakkhāna), a group, a view (diṭṭhi), a mode of practice (paṭipadā), a path (magga).
Quarrel, strife, contention, dispute, and altercation are called "contentious talk" (kathojja). Or alternatively, "contentious talk" means that such talk is without sap (anojavantī).
**"They speak contentious talk"**: they speak quarrel, they speak strife, they speak contention, they speak dispute, they speak altercation — they speak it, declare it, and express it. Hence, "dependent on another, they speak contentious talk."
