[280] **"Desiring praise, he becomes dismayed."** *Desiring praise* (pasaṃsamicchaṃ): desiring, delighting in, wishing for, longing for, hankering after praise — commendation, fame, the spreading of one's repute (vaṇṇahāriya). *He becomes dismayed* (vinighāti hoti): even before the debate he is perplexed and dismayed: "Will victory be mine, or will defeat be mine? How shall I effect the refutation (niggaha)? How shall I effect the counter-move (paṭikamma)? How shall I effect the distinction (visesa)? How shall I effect the counter-distinction (paṭivisesa)? How shall I deliver the piercing stroke (āvedhiya)? How shall I deliver the penetrating stroke (nibbedhiya)? How shall I effect the cutting-off (cheda)? How shall I effect the encirclement (maṇḍala)?" Thus even before the debate he is perplexed and dismayed. Hence: "Desiring praise, he becomes dismayed."
