[286] **He laments, grieves — one whose doctrine is inferior (hīnavādo):**
**He laments** means: [thinking,] "One thing was adverted to by me, another was thought, another was considered, another was discerned. He has a great faction, a great assembly, a great retinue; and this assembly is divided, not in concord. Let there be conversation for the sake of concord [with the assembly]; I shall break him again" — whatever prattle of speech of such a kind there is, vain talk, wailing, the act of wailing, the state of wailing: thus "he laments."
**He grieves** means: he grieves, "His is the victory"; he grieves, "Mine is the defeat"; he grieves, "His is the gain"; he grieves, "Mine is the loss"; he grieves, "His is the fame"; he grieves, "Mine is the obscurity"; he grieves, "His is the praise"; he grieves, "Mine is the blame"; he grieves, "His is the pleasure"; he grieves, "Mine is the pain"; [and thinking,] "He is honored, respected, esteemed, venerated, revered, a gainer of robes, almsfood, lodging, and medicinal requisites for the sick; I am not honored, not respected, not esteemed, not venerated, not revered, not a gainer of robes, almsfood, lodging, and medicinal requisites for the sick" — he grieves, is wearied, laments, beats his breast and wails, and falls into bewilderment: thus "he laments, grieves."
**One whose doctrine is inferior** means: his doctrine is inferior, his doctrine is low, his doctrine has fallen away, his doctrine has been made to fall away, his doctrine is not complete. Thus "he laments, grieves — one whose doctrine is inferior."
