[287] **Laments, "He has surpassed me" (upaccagā manti anutthunāti):** [he laments,] "He has gone beyond me, doctrine against doctrine (vādena vādaṃ) — surpassed, passed beyond, gone altogether beyond, transcended" — thus too, "he has surpassed me." Or alternatively, [he laments,] "Having vanquished, overwhelmed, worn down, and crushed my doctrine with his doctrine, he goes about, dwells, comports himself, carries on, maintains himself, keeps himself going, sustains himself" — thus too, "he has surpassed me." "Lamenting" (anutthunā) is a term for prattling speech, babbling, wailing, the act of wailing, the state of wailing. Hence, "laments, 'He has surpassed me.'" Therefore the Blessed One said:
He whose doctrine they declare deficient,
refuted by those who examine questions —
he, worsted in doctrine, wails and sorrows,
lamenting, "He has surpassed me."
