[292] **"For there is no other benefit than the gaining of praise (na haññadatthatthi pasaṃsalābhā):** apart from the gaining of praise there is no other benefit — no benefit for oneself, no benefit for others, no benefit for both; no benefit pertaining to this present life, no benefit pertaining to the life to come; no evident benefit, no profound benefit, no hidden benefit, no concealed benefit; no benefit to be inferred, no benefit made explicit; no blameless benefit, no benefit free from defilements, no purified benefit, no ultimate benefit — there is none, it does not exist, it is not found. Therefore: "for there is no other benefit than the gaining of praise."
Hence the Blessed One said:
These disputes have arisen among ascetics;
regarding these there is elation and dejection (ugghāti-nighāti).
Having seen this too, one should refrain from contentious talk (kathojja),
for there is no other benefit than the gaining of praise.
