[291] **Having seen this too, one should refrain from disputatious talk (kathojja)** — "Having seen this too" means: having seen, beheld, weighed, judged, made clear, and made evident this danger (ādīnava) in quarrels over views (diṭṭhi), in altercations over views, in contentions over views, in disputes over views, in strife over views — thus, "having seen this too."
"One should refrain from disputatious talk": quarrel, altercation, contention, dispute, and strife are called "disputatious talk." Or alternatively, "kathojja" means: that talk is devoid of sap (anojavantī). One should not engage in disputatious talk; one should not engage in quarrel, should not engage in altercation, should not engage in contention, should not engage in dispute, should not engage in strife; one should abandon, dispel, terminate, and bring to non-existence quarrel, altercation, contention, dispute, and strife. One should be far removed from quarrel, altercation, contention, dispute, and strife — abstaining, refraining, gone forth from them, released, freed, and detached from them; one should dwell with a mind made free of barriers (vimariyādikatena cetasā). Thus, "having seen this too, one should refrain from disputatious talk."
