[309] **"Those who, having taken up a view, dispute"** means: those who, having grasped — having taken up, seized, misapprehended, and adhered to — one or another of the sixty-two speculative views (diṭṭhigata), dispute: they make quarrels, make strife, make contention, make dispute, make discord, saying: "You do not understand this Dhamma and Discipline (dhammavinaya); I understand this Dhamma and Discipline. How could you understand this Dhamma and Discipline? You are practicing wrongly; I am practicing rightly. What I say is consistent; what you say is inconsistent. What should have been said first, you said last; what should have been said last, you said first. What you had so thoroughly rehearsed has been overturned. A charge has been laid against your doctrine; you are refuted.¹ Go about to free your doctrine, or extricate yourself if you can." Therefore it is said: "those who, having taken up a view, dispute."
