[311] **"Speak to them; for here, when a debate has arisen, there are none who create opposition."** — Speak to those adherents of views (diṭṭhigatika) [1]: [meet] refutation with refutation, counter-move with counter-move, distinction with distinction, counter-distinction with counter-distinction, binding with binding, unbinding with unbinding, cutting with cutting, encircling with encircling. They are rival champions for you, rival men, rival foes, rival wrestlers — thus, "speak to them."
**"For here, when a debate has arisen, there are none who create opposition"** — When a debate has arisen, fully arisen, been produced, been fully produced, become manifest,² whatever makers of opposition, makers of contrariety, makers of antagonism, makers of hostility might create quarrel, might create strife, might create contention, might create dispute, might create discord — these do not exist, are not found, are not discerned, are not to be obtained; they are abandoned, cut off, stilled, calmed, incapable of arising again, burned by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa). Thus, "speak to them; for here, when a debate has arisen, there are none who create opposition." Therefore the Blessed One said:
Those who, having taken up a view, dispute,
and assert, "This alone is truth" —
speak to them; for here, when a debate has arisen,
there are none who create opposition.
