[318] **"Then you came pondering" (atha tvaṃ pavitakkamāgamā):** The word "atha" (then) is a verbal connective, a linking of words, a filling-out of the phrase, a combination of syllables, a smoothness of lettering; this word "atha" is a matter of the sequence of words.
**"You came pondering" (pavitakkamāgamā):** thinking, pondering, intending thus: "Will victory be mine, or will defeat be mine? How shall I make the refutation (niggaha)? How shall I make the counter-move (paṭikamma)? How shall I make the distinction (visesa)? How shall I make the counter-distinction (paṭivisesa)? How shall I make the entangling (āvedhiya)? How shall I make the disentangling (nibbedhiya)? How shall I make the cutting-off (cheda)? How shall I make the encircling (maṇḍala)?" — thinking, pondering, intending in this way, you have come, approached, arrived, met together with me. Hence: "Then you came pondering."
