[358] **"By what would he engage in dispute?"** — By what conceit (māna), by what view, or with what person would that one engage in dispute,¹ oppose, make a quarrel, make contention, make strife, make dispute, make discord, [saying:] "You do not understand this Dhamma and Discipline … or extricate yourself, if you are able"? — thus, "by what would he engage in dispute?" Therefore the Blessed One said:
What would that brahmin say, [asserting] "It is true"?
Or by what would he dispute, [saying] "It is false"?
In whom there is neither "equal" nor "unequal,"²
By what would he engage in dispute?
