[371] **"For one detached from perception there are no ties (gantha)":** whoever develops the noble path preceded by serenity (samatha), for him the ties are suppressed from the very beginning. When arahantship is attained, for the arahant the ties, delusions, hindrances (nīvaraṇa), perceptions of sensuality (kāmasaññā), perceptions of ill will, perceptions of cruelty, and perceptions of views are abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, brought to non-existence, of a nature not to arise again in the future. Hence, "for one detached from perception there are no ties."
