[381] **"Not to be reckoned in the middle"** (vemajjhe nupasaṅkheyyo): the present period of time is called "the middle." With regard to the present period of time, craving (taṇhā) has been abandoned and view (diṭṭhi) has been relinquished. Because craving has been abandoned and view relinquished, he cannot be reckoned as "lustful," cannot be reckoned as "hating," cannot be reckoned as "deluded," cannot be reckoned as "bound," cannot be reckoned as "grasping," cannot be reckoned as "gone to distraction," cannot be reckoned as "unsettled," cannot be reckoned as "entrenched." Those volitional formations (abhisaṅkhārā) have been abandoned; because the volitional formations have been abandoned, he cannot be reckoned by way of destination (gati) as "a hell-being," or "one belonging to the animal realm," or "one belonging to the realm of hungry ghosts," or "a human," or "a deva," or "one having form," or "formless," or "percipient," or "non-percipient," or "neither-percipient-nor-non-percipient." For him there exists no cause, there exists no condition, there exists no reason by which he might be reckoned. Therefore, "not to be reckoned in the middle."
