[382] **For him there is nothing placed before** (tassa natthi purekkhataṃ): "for him" means for the Arahant whose taints (āsava) are destroyed. **Placing before** (purekkhāra): there are two kinds of placing before: placing before through craving (taṇhā) and placing before through view (diṭṭhi) … this is placing before through craving … this is placing before through view. For him placing before through craving has been abandoned, placing before through view has been relinquished; because placing before through craving has been abandoned and placing before through view has been relinquished, he does not go about having put craving or view before him: he does not have craving as his banner, craving as his standard, craving as his dominant influence; he does not have view as his banner, view as his standard, view as his dominant influence; he does not go about surrounded by craving or by view — thus too, for him there is nothing placed before. Or else: thinking "May I be of such form (rūpa) in the future time," he does not bring delight (nandī) to bear thereon; thinking "May I be of such feeling (vedanā), may I be of such perception (saññā), may I be of such volitional formations (saṅkhārā), may I be of such consciousness (viññāṇa) in the future time," he does not bring delight to bear thereon — thus too, for him there is nothing placed before. Or else: thinking "Thus may my eye be in the future time, thus may forms be," he does not direct his mind (citta) toward the obtaining of what has not been obtained; because of the mind's non-directing, he does not delight in that; not delighting in that — thus too, for him there is nothing placed before. Thinking "Thus may my ear be in the future time, thus may sounds be"; "Thus may my nose be in the future time, thus may odours be"; "Thus may my tongue be in the future time, thus may tastes be"; "Thus may my body be in the future time, thus may tangibles be"; "Thus may my mind be in the future time, thus may dhammas be," he does not direct his mind toward the obtaining of what has not been obtained; because of the mind's non-directing, he does not delight in that; not delighting in that — thus too, for him there is nothing placed before. Or else: thinking "By this virtue, or observance, or asceticism, or holy life, I shall become a deva or one among the devas," he does not direct his mind toward the obtaining of what has not been obtained; because of the mind's non-directing, he does not delight in that; not delighting in that — thus too, for him there is nothing placed before. Therefore the Blessed One said: Rid of craving before the breakup (said the Blessed One), not dependent upon the former end, not to be reckoned in the middle — for him there is nothing placed before. [Footnote 1: The Burmese (M.) reading is "purekkhārāti."]
