[387] **Not remorseful (akukkuco)**: Herein, remorse (kukkucca): fidgeting of the hands is remorse; fidgeting of the feet is remorse; fidgeting of hands and feet is remorse; perceiving what is unallowable as allowable, perceiving what is allowable as unallowable, perceiving what is blameless as blameworthy, perceiving what is blameworthy as blameless — whatever remorse of such a kind there is, the act of being remorseful, the state of being remorseful, regret of mind (cetaso vippaṭisāro), mental perplexity (manovilekho): this is called remorse. Moreover, remorse, regret of mind, mental perplexity arises from two causes: from having done and from not having done. How does remorse, regret of mind, mental perplexity arise from having done and from not having done? "Bodily misconduct has been done by me; bodily good conduct has not been done by me," — thus arises remorse, regret of mind, mental perplexity. "Verbal misconduct has been done by me; verbal good conduct has not been done by me," — thus arises remorse, regret of mind, mental perplexity. "Mental misconduct has been done by me; mental good conduct has not been done by me," — thus arises remorse, regret of mind, mental perplexity. "The destruction of life has been done by me; abstinence from the destruction of life has not been done by me," — thus arises remorse, regret of mind, mental perplexity. "Taking what is not given has been done by me; abstinence from taking what is not given has not been done by me," — thus arises remorse, regret of mind, mental perplexity. "Sexual misconduct has been done by me; abstinence from sexual misconduct has not been done by me," — thus arises remorse, regret of mind, mental perplexity. "False speech has been done by me; abstinence from false speech has not been done by me," … "Divisive speech has been done by me; abstinence from divisive speech has not been done by me," … "Harsh speech has been done by me; abstinence from harsh speech has not been done by me," … "Frivolous talk has been done by me; abstinence from frivolous talk has not been done by me," … "Covetousness has been done by me; non-covetousness has not been done by me," … "Ill will has been done by me; non-ill will has not been done by me," … "Wrong view has been done by me; right view has not been done by me," — thus arises remorse, regret of mind, mental perplexity. Thus, from having done and from not having done there arises remorse, regret of mind, mental perplexity. Or else: "I am not one who fulfils the virtues," — thus arises remorse, regret of mind, mental perplexity. "I am unguarded as to the doors in respect of the sense faculties," … "I am not moderate in eating," … "I am not devoted to wakefulness," … "I am not possessed of mindfulness and clear comprehension (sati-sampajañña)," … "The four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) have not been developed by me," … "The four right strivings have not been developed by me," … "The four bases of spiritual power have not been developed by me," … "The five faculties have not been developed by me," … "The five powers have not been developed by me," … "The seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga) have not been developed by me," … "The noble eightfold path (magga) has not been developed by me," … "Suffering (dukkha) has not been fully understood by me," … "The origin (samudaya) has not been abandoned by me," … "The path has not been developed by me," … "Cessation (nirodha) has not been realized by me," — thus arises remorse, regret of mind, mental perplexity. In whomever this remorse has been abandoned, cut off, calmed, tranquilized, rendered incapable of arising again, burnt up by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa), he is called "not remorseful." Hence: **not boastful, not remorseful**.
