[386] **Not boastful, without remorse (avikatthī akukkuco):** Here someone is a boaster, a braggart. He boasts, he brags: "I am accomplished in virtue (sīla)," or "accomplished in observances (vatta)," or "accomplished in virtue and observances"; or [he boasts] on account of birth, or clan, or being of good family, or beauty of complexion, or wealth, or study (ajjhena), or a field of work, or a field of craft, or a branch of science, or learning, or ready wit, or on one or another such ground; or [he boasts]: "I have gone forth from a high family," or "I have gone forth from a great family," or "I have gone forth from a family of great wealth," or "I have gone forth from a family of abundant wealth," or "I am known and famous among householders and those gone forth," or "I am one who gains robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick," or "I am an expert in the Suttantas," or "a bearer of the Vinaya," or "a preacher of the Dhamma," or "a forest dweller," or "an almsfood eater," or "a rag-robe wearer," or "a wearer of only three robes," or "one who walks for alms from house to house without omission," or "a refuser of food after the meal," or "one who keeps the sitter's practice," or "one who uses whatever lodging is assigned," or "I am an obtainer of the first jhāna," or "an obtainer of the second jhāna," or "an obtainer of the third jhāna," or "an obtainer of the fourth jhāna," or "an obtainer of the attainment (samāpatti) of the sphere of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana), of the attainment of the sphere of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana), of the attainment of the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana), of the attainment of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana)" — thus he boasts and brags. [But this one] does not boast thus, does not brag thus. Being far from boasting, abstaining, refraining, gone out from it, given it up, released, detached from it, he dwells with a mind (citta) made free of boundaries: thus he is **not boastful**.
