Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Mahāniddesa · Vol. 29 · Section 393

[393] **"One who sees seclusion (viveka) among contacts (phassesu)"**: **Contact (phassa)** means eye-contact, ear-contact, nose-contact, tongue-contact, body-contact, mind-contact, contact through designation (adhivacanasamphassa), contact through impingement (paṭighasamphassa); contact to be experienced as pleasant, contact to be experienced as painful, contact to be experienced as neither-painful-nor-pleasant; wholesome contact, unwholesome contact, indeterminate contact; contact of the sensual sphere, contact of the form sphere, contact of the formless sphere; emptiness contact, signless contact, undirected contact; mundane contact, supramundane contact; past contact, future contact, present contact. Whatever contact is of such a kind — the contacting, the touching, the state of being touched — this is called contact. **"One who sees seclusion among contacts"**: he sees eye-contact as void (vivitta) of self, or of anything belonging to self, or of anything permanent, or of anything stable, or of anything eternal, or of anything not subject to change. He sees ear-contact as void. He sees nose-contact as void. He sees tongue-contact as void. He sees body-contact as void. He sees mind-contact as void. He sees contact through designation as void. He sees contact through impingement as void. Contact to be experienced as pleasant … contact to be experienced as painful … contact to be experienced as neither-painful-nor-pleasant … wholesome contact … unwholesome contact … indeterminate contact … contact of the sensual sphere … contact of the form sphere … contact of the formless sphere … mundane contact … he sees supramundane contact as void of self, or of anything belonging to self, or of anything permanent, or of anything stable, or of anything eternal, or of anything not subject to change. Or else, he sees past contact as void of future contacts and of present contacts. He sees future contact as void of past contacts and of present contacts. He sees present contact as void of past contacts and of future contacts. Or else, those contacts that are noble, free of taints (āsava), supramundane, connected with emptiness — he sees those contacts as void of lust (rāga), hatred, delusion, anger, resentment, denigration, domineering, envy, avarice, deceit, hypocrisy, obstinacy, contentiousness, conceit, arrogance, intoxication, heedlessness; void of all defilements, all misconduct, all disturbances, all fevers, all torments, all unwholesome volitional formations. Therefore, "one who sees seclusion among contacts."
