[428] **"Neither anything taken up (attaṃ) nor anything rejected (nirattaṃ) is found in him"** — "Taken up (attā)": there is no eternalist view (sassatadiṭṭhi). "Rejected (nirattā)": there is no annihilationist view (ucchedadiṭṭhi). There is nothing grasped that would be "taken up"; there is nothing to be released that would be "rejected." For one who has nothing grasped, there is nothing to be released; for one who has nothing to be released, there is nothing grasped. The Arahant has passed beyond grasping and releasing; he has gone beyond growth and decline. He has lived out the dwelling, completed the conduct (caraṇa), … there is no renewed existence (punabbhava) for him. Thus, "neither anything taken up nor anything rejected is found in him." Therefore the Blessed One said:
For him there are no sons, no cattle,
no field or property is found;
neither anything taken up nor anything rejected
is found in him.
