[43] **Brought to suffering, they lament**: *Brought to suffering* means: brought to suffering (dukkha), having reached suffering, having met with suffering, having come upon suffering; having reached Māra, having met with Māra, having come upon Māra; having reached death, having met with death, having come upon death — therefore, "brought to suffering." *They lament* means: they cry out, they wail on and on, they sorrow, they are wearied, they lament, they weep beating their breasts, they fall into bewilderment — therefore, "brought to suffering, they lament."
