[445] **"From where have they arisen? Pray tell":** quarrel (kalaha), dispute (vivāda), lamentation (parideva), sorrow (soka), avarice (macchariya), conceit (māna), excessive conceit (atimāna), and malicious speech (pesuñña) — from where have these eight defilements (kilesā) arisen, from where are they born, from where are they produced, from where have they come into being, from where have they been brought into being, from where have they become manifest? What is their source (nidāna), what is their origin, what is their birth, what is their provenance? Thus he asks about the root of these eight defilements, asks about the cause, asks about the source, asks about the arising, asks about the provenance, asks about the origination, asks about the nutriment (āhāra), asks about the object (ārammaṇa), asks about the condition (paccaya), asks about the origin; he questions further, requests, invites, entreats. Hence, "From where have they arisen?"
**"Pray tell":** come, tell — declare, teach, make known, establish, disclose, analyze, make plain, explain. Hence, "From where have they arisen? Pray tell."

From where have quarrels and disputes arisen,
and lamentations and sorrows, together with avarice,
conceits and excessive conceits, together with malicious speech?
From where have they arisen? Pray tell.
