[447] **Quarrels, disputes, lamentation and sorrow, together with stinginess, spring from what is dear** (piyappahūtā kalahā vivādā paridevasokā sahamaccharā): "Dear" — dear things are of two kinds: beings or formations (saṅkhārā).
Which beings are dear? Here, those whom one has who desire one's good, who desire one's welfare, who desire one's comfort, who desire one's security from bondage (yogakkhema) — a mother, a father, a brother, a sister, a son, a daughter, friends, companions, relatives, or blood relations — these beings are dear. Which formations are dear? Agreeable forms, agreeable sounds, agreeable odours, agreeable tastes, agreeable tangible objects — these formations are dear.
Even suspecting the seizure of the dear object, they quarrel; while it is being seized, they quarrel; when it has been seized, they quarrel. Even suspecting the alteration of the dear object, they quarrel; while it is altering, they quarrel; when it has altered, they quarrel. Even suspecting the seizure of the dear object, they dispute; while it is being seized, they dispute; when it has been seized, they dispute.
