[477] **The pleasant and the unpleasant — from what do they have their source? (sātaṃ asātañca kutonidānā):** He asks about the root of the pleasant and the unpleasant (sāta, asāta) … he asks about, questions closely, begs, requests, and invites [him to declare] their origin (samudaya), thus: "From what do the pleasant and the unpleasant have their source (nidāna)? From what are they born, from what produced, from what generated, from what brought forth, from what manifested? What is their source, what is their origin, what is their birth, what is their provenance?" Therefore it is said: "The pleasant and the unpleasant — from what do they have their source?"
