[485] **"This I tell you has its source herein" (etante pabrūmi itonidānanti):** "This" (etaṃ) means that which you ask about, that which you request, that which you invite [me to declare], that which you entreat me [to explain]. **"I tell" (pabrūmi):** I tell, I point out, I teach, I make known, I establish, I disclose, I analyze, I make plain, I proclaim — thus, "this I tell you." **"Has its source herein" (itonidānaṃ):** it has contact (phassa) herein as its source (nidāna), has contact as its origin, is born of contact, has contact as its provenance — thus, "this I tell you has its source herein." Therefore the Blessed One said:
The pleasant and the unpleasant have contact as their source;
when contact does not exist, these do not come to be.
And this matter, namely non-existence and existence too —
this I tell you has its source herein.
