[509] **"Do some who are wise here declare that just so far is the highest — the purity of the spirit (yakkha)?"** Some ascetics and brahmins (samaṇabrāhmaṇā) declare, state, speak, explain, and express that just so far — by the formless attainments (arūpasamāpatti) — is the highest, the best, the most excellent, the foremost, the supreme, the most eminent.
**"Of the spirit (yakkha)":** of a being, of a human, of a youth, of a man, of a person, of a living being, of one who is born, of a creature, of a mortal (indagu), of a human being.
**"Purity (suddhi)":** purity, higher purity, complete purity; freedom, release, complete release.
**"Who are wise here":** those here who profess to be wise, profess to be steadfast, profess to have knowledge (ñāṇa); who speak by way of reasons, speak by way of characteristics, speak by way of grounds, speak by way of tenable positions — according to their own doctrine. Hence: "Do some who are wise here declare that just so far is the highest — the purity of the spirit?"
