[518] **"A wise one does not resort to existence upon existence" (bhavābhavāya na sameti dhīro):** "To existence upon existence" (bhavābhavāya) means: to existence upon existence — to kamma-existence (kammabhava) and to renewed existence (punabbhava); to kamma-existence in sense-sphere existence (kāmabhava) and to renewed existence in sense-sphere existence; to kamma-existence in form existence (rūpabhava) and to renewed existence in form existence; to kamma-existence in formless existence (arūpabhava) and to renewed existence in formless existence; to existence again and again, to destination (gati) again and again, to rearising (upapatti) again and again, to rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi) again and again, to the production of individual existence (attabhāva) again and again — he does not resort, does not come together, does not grasp, does not cling, does not adhere.
**"A wise one" (dhīro):** one who is wise, learned, possessed of wisdom, endowed with intelligence, endowed with knowledge (ñāṇa), discerning, sagacious. Hence, "a wise one does not resort to existence upon existence."
Therefore the Blessed One said:
"And having known these as dependent,
the sage (muni), the investigator, having known the dependencies,
having known, liberated, does not enter into dispute;
a wise one does not resort to existence upon existence."
