[529] (The Blessed One replied:)*
One who does not approve another's teaching (dhamma) is indeed¹
a fool, an inferior one, of debased wisdom—
then all alike are fools, of utterly debased wisdom,
for all these abide entrenched in their views.
¹ Footnote in the Siam Raṭṭha text: the Po. and M. editions read *ce* ("if") in place of *ve* ("indeed"). The translation above follows the main-text reading *ve*; with the variant *ce* the verse becomes an explicit conditional/reductio: "If one who does not approve another's teaching is thereby a fool… then all are fools…" (so Norman and Sujato at Snp 4.12). Even with *ve*, the third and fourth lines carry the same reductio force: since all disputants withhold approval of others' teachings while abiding in their own views, all alike would be fools.
