[54] **Not free from craving for various states of existence (avītataṇhāse bhavābhavesu)**: **Craving (taṇhā)** — craving for forms (rūpataṇhā) … craving for mental phenomena (dhammataṇhā).
**In various states of existence (bhavābhavesu)**: in existence upon existence, that is, in kamma-existence (kammabhava) and in renewed existence (punabbhava): in kamma-existence in the sense sphere (kāmabhava) and in renewed existence in the sense sphere; in kamma-existence in form existence (rūpabhava) and in renewed existence in form existence; in kamma-existence in formless existence (arūpabhava) and in renewed existence in formless existence; in repeated existence, in repeated destination, in repeated arising, in repeated rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi), in the repeated production of individual existence (attabhāva).
**Not free from craving**: not free from craving, not rid of craving, not having given up craving, not having vomited up craving, not released from craving, not having abandoned craving, not having relinquished craving — thus, "not free from craving for various states of existence."
Therefore the Blessed One said:
I see, trembling in the world,
this generation given over to craving for existences;
inferior men wail in the mouth of death,
not free from craving for various states of existence.
