[634] **"Not devoid of craving for existence upon existence"** (avītataṇhāse bhavābhavesu): **Craving (taṇhā)** means craving for forms, craving for sounds, craving for odours, craving for tastes, craving for tangibles, craving for dhammas.
**"For existence upon existence"** means: for existence upon existence — for kamma-existence (kammabhava), for renewed existence (punabbhava); for kamma-existence in sense-sphere existence, for renewed existence in sense-sphere existence; for kamma-existence in form-sphere existence, for renewed existence in form-sphere existence; for kamma-existence in formless-sphere existence, for renewed existence in formless-sphere existence; for existence again and again, for destination again and again, for rebirth again and again, for rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi) again and again, for the generation of individual existence (attabhāva) again and again.
**"Not devoid of craving"** means: not devoid of craving, not rid of craving, not having given up craving, not having vomited out craving, not having released craving, not having abandoned craving, not having relinquished craving — thus, "not devoid of craving for existence upon existence." Therefore the Blessed One said:
Relying upon that which is loathed,
or else upon what is seen, heard, or sensed,
passing onward and upward, they moan of purity,
not devoid of craving for existence upon existence.
