[619] **"Led on to existence, they claim to be skilled" (bhavūpanītā kusalāvadānā):** As to "led on to existence (bhava)": they are led on to existence, gone over to existence, attached to existence, intent upon existence — thus they are "led on to existence." As to "they claim to be skilled": they speak of themselves as skilled, speak of themselves as wise, speak of themselves as sagacious, speak of themselves as possessing knowledge (ñāṇa); they speak in terms of reasons, speak in terms of characteristics, speak in terms of causes, speak in terms of grounds — according to their own creed. Thus, "led on to existence, they claim to be skilled." Therefore the Blessed One said:
Holding virtue as supreme, they declare that purity comes through restraint;
having undertaken a vow (vatta), they stand established in it, thinking:
"Let us train right here, and then there will be purity" —
led on to existence, they claim to be skilled.
