[62] **Having fully understood contact (phassa), one is not greedy after it:** "Contact" means: eye-contact, ear-contact, nose-contact, tongue-contact, body-contact, mind-contact; designation-contact (adhivacanasamphassa), impingement-contact (paṭighasamphassa); contact to be felt as pleasant, contact to be felt as painful, contact to be felt as neither-painful-nor-pleasant; wholesome contact, unwholesome contact, indeterminate contact; contact belonging to the sense sphere, contact belonging to the form sphere, contact belonging to the formless sphere; empty contact, signless contact, wishless contact; mundane contact, supramundane contact; past contact, future contact, present contact. Whatever contact is of such a kind — the touching, the contacting, the state of being contacted — this is called contact. **Having fully understood contact** means: having fully known contact by the three kinds of full understanding (pariññā): full understanding as the known (ñātapariññā), full understanding as scrutinization (tīraṇapariññā), and full understanding as abandoning (pahānapariññā). What is full understanding as the known? One knows contact; one knows and sees: "This is eye-contact, this is ear-contact, this is nose-contact, this is tongue-contact, this is body-contact, this is mind-contact, this is designation-contact, this is impingement-contact, this is contact to be felt as pleasant, this is contact to be felt as painful, this is contact to be felt as neither-painful-nor-pleasant, this is wholesome contact, this is unwholesome contact, this is indeterminate contact, this is contact belonging to the sense sphere, this is contact belonging to the form sphere, this is contact belonging to the formless sphere, this is empty contact, this is signless contact, this is wishless contact, this is mundane contact, this is supramundane contact, this is past contact, this is future contact, this is present contact." This is full understanding as the known. What is full understanding as scrutinization? Having thus made it known, one scrutinizes contact: as impermanent, as suffering (dukkha), as a disease, as a boil, as a dart, as misery, as an affliction, as alien, as disintegrating, as a calamity, as a misfortune, as a peril, as an obstacle, as unstable, as brittle, as not lasting, as without protection, as without shelter, as without refuge, as void, as hollow, as empty, as not-self, as danger, as subject to change, as without substance, as the root of misery, as murderous, as subject to destruction, as subject to the taints (āsava), as conditioned, as Māra's bait, as subject to birth, as subject to aging, as subject to illness, as subject to death, as subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair, as subject to defilement; one scrutinizes it by way of its origin, by way of its passing away, by way of its gratification, by way of its danger, and by way of the escape from it. This is full understanding as scrutinization. What is full understanding as abandoning? Having thus scrutinized, one abandons, dispels, terminates, and brings to non-existence desire and lust (chandarāga) for contact. For this was said by the Blessed One: "Bhikkhus, whatever desire and lust there is for contacts — abandon it. Thus that contact will be abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, brought to non-existence, no longer subject to arising in the future." This is full understanding as abandoning. **Having fully understood contact** means: having fully known contact by these three kinds of full understanding. **Not greedy after it:** greed (gedha) is a term for craving (taṇhā) — that is, lust, passion, … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root. One in whom this greed has been abandoned, cut off, stilled, tranquilized, made incapable of arising, burnt up by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa) — he is called one who is not greedy. He is not greedy for forms, not greedy for sounds, not greedy for odors, not greedy for tastes, not greedy for tangibles; not greedy regarding family, company, dwelling, gain, fame, praise, pleasure, robes, almsfood, lodging, or medicinal requisites for the sick; regarding the sense element (dhātu), the form element, or the formless element; regarding sense-sphere existence, form-sphere existence, formless existence; percipient existence, non-percipient existence, neither-percipient-nor-non-percipient existence; one-constituent existence, four-constituent existence, five-constituent existence; regarding the past, the future, or the present; not greedy for, not tied to, not infatuated with, not engrossed in things seen, heard, sensed, or to be cognized. His greed has gone, has vanished; it is given up, vomited out, released, abandoned, relinquished. His lust has gone, has vanished; it is given up, vomited out, released, abandoned, relinquished. Hungerless, quenched, become cool, experiencing bliss, he dwells with a self become divine (brahmabhūta). Therefore it is said: having fully understood contact, one is not greedy after it.
