[622] **He trembles, having failed in action** — as to "he trembles": thinking, "I have failed in virtue (sīla), or in observance (vatta), or in virtue-and-observance (sīlabbata); I have gone wrong, I have stumbled, I have slipped; I have failed of final knowledge (aññā)," he trembles, quakes, and quakes violently — therefore, "he trembles." As to "having failed in action (kamma)": thinking, "I have failed in a formation of merit (puññābhisaṅkhāra), or a formation of demerit (apuññābhisaṅkhāra), or a formation of the imperturbable (āneñjābhisaṅkhāra); I have gone wrong, I have stumbled, I have slipped; I have failed of final knowledge," he trembles, quakes, and quakes violently — therefore, "he trembles, having failed in action."
