[623] **He yearns for and longs for purity (suddhi):** As to "he yearns," he yearns for virtue (sīla), or yearns for vows (vatta), or yearns for virtue and vows (sīlabbata); he yearns after, he hankers after — thus "he yearns." As to "and longs for purity," he longs for purity through virtue, or longs for purity through vows, or longs for purity through virtue and vows; he desires, he hankers after — thus "he yearns for and longs for purity."
