[624] *Left behind by the caravan, as one journeying away from home (satthāvahīno pavasaṃ gharamhā)*: just as a man who has gone forth from his home, traveling together with a caravan (sattha), when left behind by the caravan either follows after that caravan or returns to his own home; even so that adherent of views (diṭṭhigatika) either takes up that teacher or takes up another teacher, takes up that teaching of the Dhamma or takes up another teaching of the Dhamma, takes up that group or takes up another group, takes up that view (diṭṭhi) or takes up another view, takes up that mode of practice (paṭipadā) or takes up another mode of practice, takes up that path or takes up another path — he takes it up, holds to it, and adheres to it. Hence: "left behind by the caravan, as one journeying away from home."
Therefore the Blessed One said:
> If one has fallen away from virtue and vows,
> having failed in his task, he trembles;
> he yearns for and longs after purity,
> like one left behind by the caravan, journeying away from home.
