Mahāviyūhasuttaniddesa

Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Mahāniddesa · Vol. 29 · Section 639

[639] **By what would he be shaken? Where would he yearn?** — By what lust (rāga) would he be shaken? By what hatred would he be shaken? By what delusion would he be shaken? By what conceit (māna) would he be shaken? By what view (diṭṭhi) would he be shaken? By what restlessness (uddhacca) would he be shaken? By what doubt (vicikicchā) would he be shaken? By what latent tendencies (anusaya) would he be shaken — as one 'lustful,' or 'hating,' or 'deluded,' or 'bound,' or 'clinging,' or 'gone to distraction,' or 'gone to indecision,' or 'gone to obstinacy'? Those volitional formations (abhisaṅkhāra) have been abandoned; because the volitional formations have been abandoned, by what would he be shaken with regard to destination (gati) — as 'one bound for hell,' or 'one of animal birth,' or 'one of the realm of hungry ghosts,' or 'a human,' or 'a deva,' or 'one possessing form,' or 'one formless,' or 'one percipient,' or 'one non-percipient,' or 'one neither percipient nor non-percipient'? For him there is no cause, there is no condition, there is no reason by which he would be shaken, would tremble, would be violently shaken. Thus: **by what would he be shaken?** **Where would he yearn?** — Where would he yearn, long, and hanker? Thus: **by what would he be shaken? Where would he yearn?** Therefore the Blessed One said: For one who desires, there are yearnings, and trembling too over things conceived; but he for whom there is here no passing away and reappearing — by what would he be shaken? Where would he yearn?
