[691] **Having abandoned the former taints, not making new ones (pubbāsave hitvā nave akubbaṃ):** past form, feeling (vedanā), perception, volitional formations, and consciousness are called "the former taints (āsava)." Whatever defilements (kilesa) might arise with reference to past formations — having abandoned, relinquished, completely relinquished, given up, dispelled, made an end of, and brought those defilements to non-existence: thus, "having abandoned the former taints." **Not making new ones:** present form, feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness are called "new." Not making desire (chanda), not making affection, not making lust with reference to present formations — not generating it, not engendering it, not producing it, not bringing it into being: thus, "having abandoned the former taints, not making new ones."
