[692] **Not one who goes by desire, nor one who speaks from dogmatic conviction:**
**Not one who goes by desire** means: he does not go the wrong course of desire (chandāgati), does not go the wrong course of hatred (dosāgati), does not go the wrong course of delusion (mohāgati), does not go the wrong course of fear (bhayāgati); he does not go by the power of lust (rāga), does not go by the power of hatred, does not go by the power of delusion, does not go by the power of conceit (māna), does not go by the power of view (diṭṭhi), does not go by the power of restlessness (uddhacca), does not go by the power of doubt, does not go by the power of the latent tendencies (anusaya); he is not conveyed, led away, carried off, or swept along by factious dhammas — thus, "not one who goes by desire."
**Nor one who speaks from dogmatic conviction** means: one who speaks from dogmatic conviction [asserts]: "The world is eternal; only this is true, anything else is vain."¹ One who speaks from dogmatic conviction [asserts]: "The world is not eternal; only this is true, anything else is vain." … "A Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death; only this is true, anything else is vain." Thus, "not one who goes by desire, nor one who speaks from dogmatic conviction."
