[694] **He is not smeared in the world, not one who blames himself** — "smearing" (lepa): there are two smearings — the smearing of craving (taṇhā) and the smearing of views (diṭṭhi) … this is the smearing of craving … this is the smearing of views. For him the smearing of craving has been abandoned, the smearing of views relinquished; because the smearing of craving has been abandoned, because the smearing of views has been relinquished, he is unsmeared: he is not smeared in the world of the states of loss, he is not smeared in the human world, he is not smeared in the deva world, he is not smeared in the world of the aggregates (khandha), he is not smeared in the world of the elements (dhātu), he is not smeared in the world of the sense bases (āyatana); he is not smeared, not besmeared, not besmirched; he is unsmeared, unbesmeared, unbesmirched; he has gone out, is released, is fully freed, is detached; he dwells with a mind rid of boundaries. Thus: **he is not smeared in the world**.
**Not one who blames himself**: one blames oneself for two reasons — because of what has been done and because of what has not been done. How does one blame oneself because of what has been done and because of what has not been done? One blames oneself thus: "Bodily misconduct has been done by me; bodily good conduct has not been done by me." One blames oneself thus: "Verbal misconduct has been done by me; mental misconduct has been done by me; the destruction of life has been committed by me … wrong view has been held by me; right view has not been held by me." Thus one blames oneself because of what has been done and because of what has not been done. Or else one blames oneself thus: "I am not one who fulfills the virtues"; "I am unguarded as to the doors of the sense faculties"; "I am immoderate in eating"; "I am not devoted to wakefulness"; "I am not endowed with mindfulness and clear comprehension"; "the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) have not been developed by me"; "the four right exertions have not been developed by me"; "the four bases of spiritual power (iddhipāda) have not been developed by me"; "the five faculties have not been developed by me"; "the five powers have not been developed by me"; "the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga) have not been developed by me"; "the noble eightfold path (magga) has not been developed by me"; "suffering (dukkha) has not been fully understood by me"; "the origin of suffering has not been abandoned by me"; "the path has not been developed by me"; "cessation has not been realized by me." Thus one blames oneself because of what has been done and because of what has not been done. Not doing, not producing, not generating, not bringing forth, not bringing into being kamma for which one would thus blame oneself, he is not one who blames himself. Thus: **he is not smeared in the world, not one who blames himself**. Therefore the Blessed One said:
Having abandoned former taints (āsava), not making new ones,
not going along by desire, nor yet a dogmatic speaker,
that wise one, fully freed from views,
is not smeared in the world, not one who blames himself.
