[714] **"Lower, or else his equal"**: one should not generate the conceit of inferiority (omāna), thinking "I am inferior," on account of birth, or on account of clan, … or on account of any other ground whatsoever. One should not generate conceit (māna), thinking "I am his equal," on account of birth, or on account of clan, or on account of being the son of a good family, or on account of beauty of complexion, or on account of wealth, or on account of study (ajjhena), or on account of a sphere of work, or on account of a sphere of craft, or on account of a branch of knowledge, or on account of learning, or on account of ready wit, or on account of any other ground whatsoever. Hence, "lower, or else his equal."
