[718] *He should calm just what is internal (ajjhattameva upasame)*: internally he should calm lust (rāga), should calm hatred, should calm delusion; anger (kodha), grudging (upanāha), depreciation (makkha), domineering (paḷāsa), envy (issā), avarice (macchariya), deceit (māyā), hypocrisy (sāṭheyya), obstinacy (thambha), presumption (sārambha), conceit (māna), excessive conceit (atimāna), intoxication (mada), heedlessness (pamāda), all defilements (kilesa), all misconduct (duccarita), all distress (daratha), all fevers (pariḷāha), all torments (santāpa), all unwholesome volitional formations (akusalābhisaṅkhāra) — these he should calm, pacify, allay, extinguish, and still. Hence, "he should calm just what is internal."
