[721] **"There is nothing taken up (attaṃ) — how then anything cast off (nirattaṃ)?"** — "there is not" (natthi) is a denial. "Taken up" (attaṃ): there is no eternalism (sassatadiṭṭhi); "cast off" (nirattaṃ): there is no annihilationism (ucchedadiṭṭhi). "Taken up": there is nothing grasped; "cast off": there is nothing to be released. For one who has nothing grasped, there is nothing to be released; for one who has something to be released, there is something grasped. The Arahant has transcended grasping and releasing, has passed beyond growth and decline. He has fulfilled the dwelling (of the spiritual life), has completed the conduct (caraṇa) … there is for him no renewed existence — thus, "there is nothing taken up — how then anything cast off?" Therefore the Blessed One said:
Just within let him be at peace;
a bhikkhu should not seek peace from another quarter.
For one who is at peace within,
there is nothing taken up — how then anything cast off?
