[725] **"A bhikkhu should not create a swelling anywhere"** — "swellings" (ussadā): there are seven swellings (ussada): the swelling of lust (rāga), the swelling of hatred, the swelling of delusion, the swelling of conceit (māna), the swelling of views (diṭṭhi), the swelling of defilements (kilesa), the swelling of kamma. That he should not create, should not generate, should not engender, should not produce, should not bring forth. **"Anywhere"**: anywhere, in anything, in any place — whether internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. Hence, "a bhikkhu should not create a swelling anywhere." Therefore the Blessed One said:
Just as in the middle of the ocean
no wave arises, but it remains steady,
so should he be steady, unstirred (aneja);
a bhikkhu should not create a swelling anywhere.
