[758] **"A bhikkhu, when praised, should not be puffed up"** — here some praise a bhikkhu on account of birth, or … or on account of some ground or other; they praise, extol, celebrate, and laud him. Being praised, extolled, celebrated, and lauded, he should not give rise to elation on account of the praise, the extolling, the celebration, or the bearing about of laudation; he should not give rise to self-exaltation, should not give rise to conceit (māna), should not give rise to obstinacy; he should not thereby become stiff, rigid, holding his head high. Hence: "a bhikkhu, when praised, should not be puffed up."
