[771] **"One should be led away from false speech (mosavajjena niyyetha)"**: false speech (mosavajja) is what is called lying speech (musāvāda). Here someone, gone to a council or gone to an assembly … or for the sake of some trifling material gain, knowingly speaks falsehood — this is called false speech. Moreover, false speech comes about in three ways: beforehand he knows, "I shall speak falsehood"; while speaking he knows, "I am speaking falsehood"; having spoken he knows, "Falsehood has been spoken by me" — in these three ways false speech comes about. Moreover, false speech comes about in four ways, in five ways, in six ways, in seven ways, in eight ways: beforehand he knows, "I shall speak falsehood"; while speaking he knows, "I am speaking falsehood"; having spoken he knows, "Falsehood has been spoken by me"; misrepresenting his view, misrepresenting his acceptance, misrepresenting his preference, misrepresenting his perception, misrepresenting his state — in these eight ways false speech comes about. **"One should be led away from false speech"**: one should go out from false speech; one should abandon false speech, dispel it, make an end of it, bring it to non-existence; one should be one who has shunned false speech, abstained from it, refrained from it, gone out from it, released from it, freed from it, detached from it; one should dwell with a mind (citta) made free of boundaries. Hence, "one should be led away from false speech."
