[777] **For one at peace does not create hostility (na hi santo paṭisenikaroti)** — **At peace (santo)**: because of the pacification of lust one is at peace; because of the pacification of hatred, of delusion, of anger, of grudge … because all unwholesome volitional formations (akusalābhisaṅkhārā) have been pacified, stilled, calmed down, quenched, extinguished, made to vanish, and tranquilized, one is at peace, appeased, calmed, extinguished, tranquilized — thus, "at peace."
**For one at peace does not create hostility**: one at peace does not make, does not generate, does not engender, does not produce, does not bring into being an opposing force, an opposing combatant, an opposing thorn, an opposing faction — thus, "for one at peace does not create hostility." Therefore the Blessed One said:
Though provoked on hearing much speech
from ascetics or from those of many words,
one should not answer them harshly,
for one at peace does not create hostility.
